Before
To Mercedes Roffé
In time past.
Not earlier today
or even yesterday,
but years ago
and often.
Like when I had nightmares
or
when I was tucked in.
When you were small
and your mother colored
on a blank page scribbling a name.
When that name was a whisper
in the past,
yours or mine,
outside of time.
Like when you dreamed of the future
or this land was uninhabited.
Like the pyramids at Giza
or the Mayan calendar.
Like the concept of zero
or the stars.
Like the space in between
or the Twin Towers,
like a dream.
In the time when I wrote these lines,
earlier today
or years ago,
before.
